Suman Billa, Additional Secretary, Tourism, Government of India, delivered a compelling address at the “Tourism Sustainability Summit 2025.” In his remarks, he emphasized the critical need for responsible growth within the tourism sector. While global tourism is witnessing significant growth, India’s tourism trajectory is outpacing global trends. Billa stressed that such growth must align with the principle of “Grow Bigger – Grow Better,” focusing on inclusiveness and sustainability.
Shared Responsibility Towards Places, People, and the Planet
Billa highlighted the importance of shared responsibility across all tourism stakeholders. He urged them to take active roles in preserving destinations, supporting local communities, and protecting the environment. A key part of his message was the need for daily conscious actions through the Mission LiFE initiative, which advocates for sustainable living habits that can collectively create a global impact.
Eco-Sensitive Travel and Community Support
Under the Travel for LiFE initiative, Billa encouraged travelers to prioritize eco-sensitive practices and actively support local communities and traditional crafts. He also advocated for offering meaningful tourism experiences, such as homestays and nature walks, which not only enhance the tourism experience but also provide direct economic benefits to local populations.
Private Sector: From Compliance to Commitment
Billa called on the private sector to move beyond regulatory compliance to a deeper, core commitment to sustainability. He echoed the statement by Mr. Hemant that “sustainability should not be a compulsion but a commitment.” Billa urged businesses in the hospitality industry to invest in green buildings, carbon-neutral operations, and creating livelihoods within local communities.
Technology as an Enabler of Sustainability
Acknowledging the role of innovation in achieving sustainability goals, Billa emphasized the need for a human-centric approach to technology. He stressed that digital solutions, smart infrastructure, and technology-driven sustainable practices can significantly reduce the environmental impact of tourism.
Vision for India’s Tourism Future
Billa reaffirmed Prime Minister Modi’s vision of positioning India among the top three global tourism destinations by 2047. He noted that the Incredible India initiative’s ongoing alignment with sustainability goals plays a key role in this mission. He called for the strengthening of India’s cultural and environmental values to achieve this vision.
Concluding his address, Billa expressed optimism that the discussions and celebrations from the summit would provide a blueprint for a sustainable future, paving the way for a tourism industry that is economically robust, environmentally responsible, and socially inclusive.
