India’s Travel Boom in 2025: Thomas Cook & SOTC Reveal Key Holiday Trends

India’s travel landscape is undergoing a dynamic shift, as detailed in the 4th edition of the India Holiday Report 2025 released by Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. and SOTC Travel. Drawing insights from over 2,500 respondents, the report reveals a notable increase in travel frequency, spending patterns, and a growing preference for immersive, experience-led holidays.

According to the report, 85% of Indians plan to take more holidays this year, with 84% of them willing to increase their travel budgets by 20 to 50%. This marks a significant shift toward travel as a priority lifestyle choice. Additionally, 54% of travellers are extending their vacation duration by 5 to 10 days, making average trips last between 8 to 15 days. A large number of respondents 60% are actively seeking unique, bucket-list experiences such as polar cruises, wildlife safaris, stargazing expeditions, and attending global music or sporting events.

Multigenerational and group travel continues to be the norm, with 90% of respondents preferring to travel with companions. Families and couples dominate the scene at 65% and 60% respectively, while solo travel especially among women and older travellers is also gaining momentum. In terms of destinations, Europe remains the top international choice at 50%, followed closely by Southeast Asia (46%) and the UAE (37%). On the domestic front, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are preferred by 55% of Indian travellers, followed by the North East, Bhutan, Rajasthan, and Kerala.

The report also notes the rising popularity of alternative travel formats. Cruise vacations (45%), self-drive holidays (35%), and scenic train journeys (20%) are becoming popular among those seeking slow and immersive travel experiences. Luxury travel is on the rise, with 36% of respondents opting for premium offerings like supercar experiences, private island dining, and stays in boutique properties or castles.

Sustainability and technology are becoming integral to travel decisions. Around 37% of travellers now factor eco-conscious practices into their planning, while 35% are using AI-powered tools and digital platforms for researching, booking, and organizing itineraries. Booking behaviour is becoming increasingly “phygital,” with 58% of travellers combining online research with offline bookings to strike a balance between convenience and personalized service.

SD Nandakumar, President & Country Head Holidays & Corporate Tours at SOTC Travel, emphasized the rising interest in slow, immersive, and spiritual travel, particularly among millennials and Gen Z.

Overall, the India Holiday Report 2025 clearly shows that Indians are travelling more, spending more, and actively seeking meaningful, curated travel experiences. With evolving formats, increased demand for premium services, and a focus on personalization, India’s travel industry is poised for a vibrant and expansive year ahead.
