IndiGo Appoints Vikram Singh Mehta as New Chairman After Venkataramani Sumantran’s Tenure Ends

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has appointed Vikram Singh Mehta as the new Chairman of its board, following the completion of Venkataramani Sumantran’s five-year term. Mehta, who joined the board of InterGlobe Aviation—IndiGo’s parent company—in May 2022, brings extensive leadership experience from global and Indian corporations.

Mehta previously served as Chairman of the Shell Group in India and led Shell’s operations in Egypt. He has held board roles at Colgate Palmolive, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Larsen & Toubro, and holds master’s degrees from Oxford and Tufts University. His early career included a stint in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), and he has been recognized with awards such as Asia House’s ‘Businessman of the Year’ (2010) and Asia Centre’s ‘Best Independent Director’ (2016).

IndiGo acknowledged Sumantran’s contributions in steering the airline through the post-pandemic recovery and growth phase. Following the announcement of Mehta’s appointment, IndiGo shares closed with a modest gain of 0.20%, signaling market confidence in the leadership transition.
