IntrCity SmartBus has expanded its SmartBus.AQI service to South India with the launch of operations on the Chennai–Coimbatore route, marking a significant step in its clean-air travel initiative.
The move builds on the company’s growing presence across North and West India, including key corridors such as Delhi, Hyderabad–Bengaluru and Nagpur–Mumbai. Since its introduction in October 2025, the SmartBus.AQI service has recorded over 90% occupancy on major routes, indicating strong passenger demand for healthier travel options.
The SmartBus.AQI system, developed in partnership with Respirer Living Sciences, is designed to filter pollutants such as PM2.5, CO₂, dust and smoke, while offering real-time air quality monitoring to passengers through onboard displays and the company’s mobile app. During pilot runs, the system maintained PM2.5 levels at around 40 µg/m³ for most of the journey—well below India’s prescribed safety limits.
Speaking on the expansion, Manish Rathi, Co-founder and CEO of IntrCity SmartBus, said the initiative was driven by the need to address in-cabin air quality, an often overlooked aspect of long-distance travel. He added that the company aims to make clean air a standard feature across its network.
The Chennai launch event saw participation from transport planners and industry stakeholders, including representatives from the Tamil Nadu Omni Bus Operators Association, reflecting growing support for sustainable mobility solutions in the intercity segment.
With operations now spanning over 20 cities, the company plans to further scale its air-purified fleet as part of its broader strategy to enhance passenger experience through innovation. In addition to air-quality solutions, IntrCity has introduced features such as onboard washrooms, digital check-ins and departure lounges to differentiate its services in the competitive intercity travel market.
The latest rollout underscores a broader shift in the transport sector towards integrating health and sustainability into core service offerings, as travellers increasingly prioritize safety and comfort alongside connectivity.
