ITA Airways Set to Join Star Alliance, Enhancing Global Connectivity for Travelers by 2026

ITA Airways has officially received approval to begin its integration into the Star Alliance, marking a major step forward for Italy’s national carrier. This decision, confirmed by the Star Alliance Chief Executive Board (CEB), comes shortly after ITA Airways’ induction into the Lufthansa Group earlier this year, signaling the airline’s strategic growth and its path towards joining the world’s largest airline alliance. The integration process is now in full motion, with ITA Airways expected to become a full member by early 2026.

Theo Panagiotoulias, CEO of Star Alliance, celebrated the milestone, stating, “In early 2026, ITA Airways will officially join the Star Alliance network. This decision reflects the strong confidence our members have in ITA Airways and strengthens our global network, offering seamless connections for travelers around the world. ITA Airways’ addition will play a crucial role in expanding our presence in Europe, especially through its key hubs in Italy.”

Joerg Eberhart, CEO of ITA Airways, expressed excitement about the move, highlighting the airline’s commitment to enhancing the global reach of Star Alliance. “Joining Star Alliance is a significant milestone in our journey, and we are eager to bring the excellence of Made in Italy to the network. We look forward to offering our customers the numerous benefits of the world’s largest airline alliance,” Eberhart said.

As part of its integration, ITA Airways will contribute 360 daily flights to the Star Alliance network, significantly expanding the alliance’s European footprint. Rome and Milan, two of Italy’s largest travel hubs, will become even more vital to the alliance, with 16 Star Alliance members currently serving these cities.

The Lufthansa Group, which is mentoring ITA Airways through its integration, plays a key role in ensuring a smooth transition. Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group, expressed pride in ITA Airways’ progress, saying, “ITA Airways will become the fifth hub airline of the Lufthansa Group to join Star Alliance, and we are dedicated to ensuring their successful integration. This new membership will provide Star Alliance customers with more personalized travel options and further enrich the network.”

Once fully integrated, the Star Alliance will expand to 26 member airlines, offering more than 18,000 daily flights to 192 countries, providing passengers with enhanced connectivity and travel opportunities worldwide.
