Kerala Govt Sanctions INR 1.02 Crore to Boost Tourism Infrastructure at Ramakkalmedu in Idukki

In a significant move to enhance eco-tourism in the Idukki district, the Kerala government has sanctioned INR 1,02,40,305 for the development of infrastructure and visitor amenities at the scenic Ramakkalmedu tourist site. Known as the ‘Cradle of Wind’, Ramakkalmedu is one of the most popular nature-bound destinations in Kerala, drawing nearly 10,000 visitors daily with its panoramic views of Tamil Nadu’s village-strewn plains, a giant wind farm, and iconic landmarks like the Kuravan Kurathi sculpture and Malamuzhaki Vezhambal watchtower.

The project, approved by the state’s Department of Tourism, aims to sustainably upgrade facilities including rain shelters, canteens, solar lighting, fencing, entrance gate, ticket counter, modern toilet blocks, electrical works, seating benches, handrails, signages, a children’s play area, and proper waste disposal systems. The landmark sculptures and watchtower at the site will also be renovated to further enhance the tourist experience.

Tourism Minister P. A. Mohamed Riyas noted that the move aligns with Kerala Tourism’s current surge in footfall, emphasizing that hill destinations like Ramakkalmedu offer tremendous potential for sustainable tourism. Revenue generated from the project will be shared in a 60:40 ratio between the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) and the Department of Tourism. The entire development is slated for completion within eight months, promising a more visitor-friendly and eco-conscious destination for both domestic and international tourists.

This strategic investment not only aims to boost local tourism but also reinforces Kerala’s commitment to promoting high-range destinations with improved infrastructure and responsible tourism practices.
