Maha Kumbh 2025 Drives Massive Surge in Transportation with Over 1,600 New Routes

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj has triggered an unprecedented rise in transportation demand, with over 1,600 new bus and train routes added to accommodate millions of pilgrims. According to a travel trends analysis by Sciative Solutions, bus transport capacity has surged 378%, and train pre-bookings reached 62% of available seats by the end of January.

The Delhi–Prayagraj route saw a 648% spike in bus travel during January, while Indian Railways introduced additional trains from Chandigarh, Ludhiana, and Mohali, scaling services fourfold from November 2024 to January 2025. Bus deployment peaked on February 10, before stabilizing to 34.9% below its highest levels. Major routes like Kanpur–Prayagraj and Lucknow–Prayagraj also recorded a sharp rise in passenger demand.

Experts highlight that efficient transportation networks are crucial for managing one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, ensuring smooth travel for millions. As Maha Kumbh progresses, transport operators continue adapting to the surge, demonstrating the sector’s agility in handling such a massive logistical challenge.
