The vibrant folk traditions of Maharashtra and Odisha came alive at Lokotsav – The Celebration of Folk Culture, held at Maharashtra Sadan under the Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat initiative. Organized by the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Maharashtra Sadan, and Maharashtra Information Centre (DGIPR), the festival showcased the rich heritage of traditional dance forms.
The event was inaugurated by R. Vimla, Secretary and Resident Commissioner of Maharashtra Sadan, in the presence of Assistant Resident Commissioner Dr. Rajesh Adapawar, Deputy Director (A/C) MIC Amarjyot Kaur Arora, and members of Delhi’s Marathi community.
The audience was captivated by the energetic performances of Dhol Bohada, a tribal folk dance from Maharashtra, and Bajasal, a festive dance from Odisha. Led by Shri Vaman Mali from Mokhada, Palghar, a team of 20 artists performed Dhol Bohada with rhythmic beats of Dhol-Tasha (traditional drums). The electrifying dance, featuring both young and elderly artists, depicted the deep connection of Maharashtra’s tribal community with wildlife, particularly their reverence for tigers.
Odisha’s Bajasal dance, performed by a group led by Shri Dayanand Panda, added to the cultural spectacle. Traditionally performed during weddings and festivals, this dance featured 15 folk artists playing traditional instruments such as Dhol, Nishan, Tasa, Mohuri, and Jhanj. Their colorful costumes and high-energy performance won thunderous applause from the audience.
As part of the Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat initiative, Maharashtra and Odisha have established a cultural exchange agreement. The festival provided a platform for artists from both states to showcase their folk traditions, strengthening cultural ties and preserving India’s diverse heritage.
