The Ministry of External Affairs has rolled out a fully upgraded, technology-driven passport ecosystem, bringing into effect the Passport Seva Programme V2.0, the Global Passport Seva Programme V2.0, and the nationwide introduction of e-Passports for citizens in India and abroad.
As part of the overhaul, the MEA implemented the enhanced Passport Seva system on May 26, 2025, across all 37 Passport Offices, 93 Passport Seva Kendras, and 450 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras. The global version of the platform went live on October 28, 2025, covering Indian Embassies and Consulates around the world.
The upgraded system brings every participant in the passport issuance process onto a single integrated digital platform designed to improve transparency, reduce processing time and streamline user experience. New features include AI-enabled chat and voice assistance, a refreshed website, and a mobile app allowing easier form submission, document uploads, and payments through UPI and QR codes.
A major highlight of the reform is the introduction of e-Passports, which combine traditional booklet security with an embedded RFID chip and antenna carrying the holder’s biometric and personal details, compliant with ICAO standards. According to the Ministry, the new e-Passports will strengthen security and verification while simplifying international travel. All newly issued passports will follow the electronic format, while existing passports will remain valid until their expiry date.
