Travel in Asia is evolving, with more travellers moving away from the bustling pace of big cities to seek slower, more meaningful experiences in nature. According to a new study by leading digital travel platform Agoda, rural destinations with fewer than 50,000 residents are witnessing a sharp rise in popularity. The research, based on millions of accommodation searches across Asia, highlights eight such hidden gems where travellers can breathe fresh air, explore scenic trails, and immerse themselves in local life. Among the top rural escapes is Munnar, Kerala’s famed hill station, which proudly stands as the only Indian destination on the list.
Nestled in the lush Western Ghats, Munnar has long been a favourite among domestic tourists, and now its inclusion in Agoda’s Asia-wide rankings is set to boost its global appeal. The hill town is celebrated for its rolling tea plantations, cool mountain climate, and winding roads adorned with gushing waterfalls. Visitors can explore plantation walks, discover the colonial legacy at the Tata Tea Museum, and trek through Eravikulam National Park to spot the endangered Nilgiri tahr. Munnar also offers panoramic viewpoints at Top Station, boating experiences at Mattupetty Dam, and breathtaking sights of Attukal waterfalls. A rare highlight is the blooming of the Neelakurinji flower, which turns the hillsides blue once every twelve years, drawing travellers from around the world.
Agoda’s Country Director for the Indian Subcontinent, Gaurav Malik, emphasised the growing demand for rural escapes: “Indian travellers are increasingly looking beyond big cities and turning to rural destinations that offer both natural beauty and cultural richness. With its tea gardens, misty hills, and wildlife, Munnar emerged as a favourite among those seeking a peaceful yet immersive getaway.”
Munnar’s recognition in Agoda’s list not only underlines its charm but also positions it as one of Asia’s most desirable rural travel destinations. For travellers seeking a blend of natural beauty, wildlife encounters, and cultural experiences, Munnar offers the perfect escape far from the city rush.
