PM Modi Unveils Infrastructure Projects Worth INR 2,200 Crore in Varanasi, Accelerating Smart City and Heritage Transformation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi for the 51st time, inaugurating and laying the foundation for a series of transformative projects valued at INR 2,200 crore. These initiatives aim to enhance Varanasi’s infrastructure and public services across transportation, energy, health, education, and urban development, furthering the region’s Smart City vision while preserving its rich heritage.

A major focus of the visit was on improving road connectivity—key corridors like the Varanasi-Bhadohi route are set for widening and strengthening, alongside the construction of new railway overbridges to alleviate traffic congestion. The modernisation push includes the Smart Distribution Project and underground electrical infrastructure valued at over INR 880 crore, designed to boost power reliability and reduce outages.

To elevate tourism and cultural vibrancy, the redevelopment of eight iconic riverfront ghats, beautification of sacred ponds, and restoration of heritage landmarks such as Munshi Premchand’s ancestral house have been initiated. New city facility centers and eco-friendly park spaces are being developed to improve urban living and leisure.

The Prime Minister also launched 47 Rural Drinking Water Schemes under the Jal Jeevan Mission, aiming to provide clean water access to remote villages. Education and healthcare in the region will benefit from upgrades to 53 schools, creation of a state-of-the-art district library, the installation of advanced robotic surgery systems, and a newly planned homoeopathic hospital.

Collectively, these projects highlight the government’s integrated approach to evolving Varanasi into a model Smart City combining historic conservation, environmental sustainability, and the latest public infrastructure advances for holistic civic welfare and economic growth.
