The much-awaited Purnia Airport is all set to begin commercial flight operations in September, providing a major connectivity boost to the Seemanchal region. Developed under the Centre’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, the airport will initially offer direct flights to Delhi and Kolkata operated exclusively by IndiGo, ensuring faster and more convenient travel for residents. Located near the IAF airbase at Chunapur, just 10 km from the district headquarters, the airport features a state-of-the-art interim terminal spanning 3,000 sq m, built at a cost of INR 34 crore, and will be inaugurated on September 15 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Purnia for multiple project launches. Designed to handle 300 passengers during peak hours, the facility is equipped with two departure, two arrival, and two boarding gates, while also showcasing local heritage with Manjusha art décor. The airside infrastructure utilizes the Indian Air Force’s 2,743-metre runway, enabling operations of larger aircraft. Security has been strengthened with a 1,706.8-metre boundary wall, and accessibility will be improved with a new 930-metre four-lane approach road built at a cost of over INR 14 crore. Spread across 67 acres, the civil enclave includes aprons, taxiways, and ground service areas, positioning the airport as a catalyst for economic growth in Bihar’s northeast districts. With its launch, Purnia Airport is expected to transform air travel in the region, enhance mobility for residents, and drive new opportunities for trade, tourism, and development in Seemanchal.
