Red Fort Remain Closed December 5–14 as India Hosts UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Session

The iconic Red Fort in Delhi will be closed to visitors from December 5 to 14, 2025, as India prepares to host one of UNESCO’s most prestigious cultural events — the 20th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Scheduled from December 8 to 13, the global meeting will bring together international delegates, culture experts, policymakers, and representatives from dozens of countries to review and protect living cultural traditions worldwide. In view of the high-profile event, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has ordered a complete public closure of the Red Fort complex for security arrangements, logistical preparations, and venue setup. The monument will reopen to tourists on December 15, 2025.

This annual UNESCO session is among the world’s most influential platforms dedicated to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, including performing arts, rituals, festive events, craftsmanship skills, and traditional knowledge systems. More than 60 nominations from countries across the globe will be evaluated during the 2025 edition. India’s hosting of this prestigious event highlights the country’s growing leadership in global cultural diplomacy and offers an opportunity to showcase its own rich heritage traditions on the international stage. As the Red Fort turns into a global cultural hub for the week, the event is expected to draw worldwide attention to India’s commitment to heritage preservation, cultural diversity, and international collaboration.
