Saudi Arabia has ordered eight Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil passenger vessels, the world’s first zero-emission ships, for its NEOM city project. This is the largest order ever for the Stockholm-based company.
The Candela P-12, which was launched last year, is designed to revolutionize maritime travel with its zero-emission ethos. These vessels are equipped with advanced computer-controlled hydrofoils that allow them to glide above the water, significantly reducing energy consumption by 80% compared to traditional ships. The P-12 is set to begin servicing Stockholm’s public transport system in the fall of 2024, showcasing its capabilities before expanding to other markets.
With a maximum speed of 25 knots (approximately 28.77 mph) and a battery life of over two hours, the P-12 can comfortably accommodate up to 30 passengers. The vessel lifts above the water at its take-off speed, enhancing efficiency and providing a smoother ride. Its powerful 252-kWh battery not only ensures sustainable travel but also allows for quicker travel times and more frequent departures than conventional vessels.
The introduction of the Candela P-12 hydrofoils is expected to transform passenger transport within NEOM, fostering a new era of eco-friendly travel in the region.
