Shaikha Al Nowais nominated to make history as first female UN Tourism head

In a moment that marks a powerful new chapter in the history of global tourism, Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais, a trailblazing Emirati business leader, has been nominated to become the next Secretary-General of UN Tourism, starting January 2026. The decision, made following official Council protocol, now awaits final approval by the UN Tourism General Assembly.

If confirmed, Shaikha Al Nowais will become the first woman ever to lead the organization in its 50-year history—a landmark appointment not only for the Middle East but for the entire tourism sector.

A respected figure in international hospitality, Al Nowais brings more than 16 years of experience to the role. As Corporate Vice President at Rotana Hotels, she has led owner relations across some of the most dynamic regions in the world—including the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Turkey. Her leadership has long been defined by vision, diplomacy, and a deep understanding of cross-cultural dynamics in tourism.

Educated in Finance at Zayed University, Al Nowais has consistently championed women’s empowerment and regional collaboration. She currently chairs the Abu Dhabi Chamber’s Tourism Working Group, and serves on the boards of both the Abu Dhabi Businesswomen Council and Les Roches Hospitality Academy, a world-renowned institution in hospitality management.

Her nomination is not just symbolic—it sends a clear message about diversity, inclusion, and the evolving face of global leadership.

As the tourism industry recovers and rebuilds in a post-pandemic world, the choice of a woman with deep regional roots and global experience represents a meaningful step forward. Her appointment could inspire a new generation of women in tourism, leadership, and diplomacy.

The world now watches as the General Assembly prepares to cast its vote—on not just a leader, but a legacy in the making.
