Shimla is preparing to unveil Asia’s longest ropeway, a transformative project set to redefine both transport and tourism in the hill station. Spanning an impressive 60 km, the ropeway will feature 15 boarding points and a fleet of 660 cabins, with the capacity to transport 2,000 passengers per hour. Set to alleviate Shimla’s notorious traffic congestion, especially during peak tourist seasons, the project will significantly reduce travel times and provide passengers with scenic, uninterrupted rides. With an estimated cost of INR 1,734 crore, it will become the second-largest ropeway in the world.
This initiative aims to ease the heavy traffic that often clogs Shimla’s narrow mountain roads, offering an eco-friendly and efficient alternative. The ropeway will directly connect major tourist spots, improving mobility for both residents and visitors, and enhancing Shimla’s appeal as a top destination. The new transport link is expected to boost tourism and stimulate the local economy, benefiting businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and markets, while promoting sustainable travel and reducing carbon emissions.
The project aligns with Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to eco-tourism and is designed with safety and modern technology in mind, ensuring reliability year-round. The ropeway’s launch will not only redefine Shimla’s infrastructure but also set a new standard for urban mobility and sustainable tourism in India.
