Swadesh Darshan 2.0: Tourism Ministry Sanctions 53 Projects Worth ₹2,208 Crore

Under its revamped Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, the Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned 53 tourism development projects worth ₹2,208.31 crore, aimed at creating sustainable, responsible and experience-led destinations across the country.

While tourism development remains primarily the responsibility of State Governments and Union Territories, the Ministry of Tourism extends financial assistance for infrastructure and experience development based on project proposals received from States/UTs, subject to scheme guidelines, inter-se priority and availability of funds. Approved components include sustainability, safety, sanitation and community participation, depending on project requirements.

Launched in 2022, Swadesh Darshan 2.0 focuses on minimising the negative impact of tourism while maximising benefits for local communities. The scheme promotes environmental, socio-cultural and economic sustainability, encourages the use of renewable energy and eco-friendly materials, and emphasises accessible infrastructure and responsible tourist behaviour. Local community and stakeholder consultations are integral to destination planning under the scheme.

Challenge-Based Destination Development

As part of Swadesh Darshan 2.0, the Ministry also introduced the Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD) initiative to ensure holistic destination transformation across the entire tourism value chain. Under this initiative, 38 projects worth approximately ₹698 crore have been sanctioned to enhance visitor experience while positioning destinations as sustainable and responsible tourism hubs.

Focus on Long-Term Sustainability

The Ministry periodically reviews the progress of sanctioned projects and encourages State Governments and UT Administrations to ensure effective operation and management so that benefits reach local communities and stakeholders.

To further strengthen sustainability efforts, the Ministry has released a National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism, aimed at mainstreaming sustainability in India’s tourism sector while promoting resilience, inclusivity, carbon neutrality and efficient resource use.

Additionally, the ‘Travel for LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment)’ programme has been launched under Mission LiFE to create awareness among tourists and tourism businesses, nudging them towards nature-positive and responsible tourism practices.

This information was shared by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
