Telangana’s Tourism Transformation: A Bold New Vision

As Telangana steps into a new era of tourism, its ambitious plans are being shaped by the determined leadership of Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao. At the forefront of this transformation, Rao’s recent addresses reflect a strategic push to position the state as a global tourism hub, capitalizing on its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.

During the pre-launch event of the 72nd Miss World pageant in Hyderabad, Minister Jupally Krishna Rao emphasized the global exposure the event would bring.
“With this, we’ll be showcasing Telangana, its heritage, its culture, art forms, and strengths to the globe. Therefore, we’ll be attracting lakhs of people within the country and even from outside the country who support the promotion of tourism. It will help in generating revenue and also providing employment for the unemployed youth, men and women.”
Addressing concerns over the event’s expenditure, he drew parallels with international cultural successes:
“Notably, the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise alone has generated more revenue than the sale of 15 million Honda cars, demonstrating the power of cultural exports in shaping economic outcomes.”
In the Legislative Assembly, Minister Rao introduced the state’s first comprehensive tourism policy:
“Telangana is a treasure trove of tourist destinations with magnificent forts, temples, serene lakes, abundant wildlife, and a thriving art and culture scene. However, we have not effectively harnessed this potential in the last decade.”
The policy aims to attract ₹15,000 crore in investments and create 3 lakh jobs over five years.
At the inauguration of new water sports facilities at Hussain Sagar, Minister Rao highlighted the state’s focus on water-based tourism:
“Water sports are rapidly gaining popularity, and the government is committed to promoting water tourism and adventure activities in the state.”
He mentioned plans to develop areas like the backwaters of Somashila and Nagarjuna Sagar to international standards, aiming to boost local employment and revenue.
Minister Rao criticized past neglect of the tourism sector and outlined plans for revitalization:(The New Indian Express)
“Tourism was the most neglected subject under the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) rule. The State lacks a dedicated policy and framework for tourism development, with the last policy drafted in the united Andhra Pradesh in 2010.” (The Hindu)
He announced initiatives like developing the Buddhavanam project into an international center for Mahayana Buddhism and promoting traditional art forms such as ‘Perini Shivatandavam’ dance
The minister emphasized leveraging public-private partnerships (PPP) to develop tourism infrastructure:
“The government aims to develop underutilized tourism properties to generate revenue.”
Plans include establishing Special Tourism Areas (STAs) focusing on eco-tourism, heritage tourism, and adventure tourism, with projects like ropeways at Bhongir Fort and wellness resorts in Anantagiri Hills.
These statements reflect Telangana’s strategic efforts to position itself as a premier tourism destination by leveraging its cultural heritage, natural beauty, and modern infrastructure.
