Thai Airways Officially Shuts Down Thai Smile Airways After 12 Years of Financial Losses

Thai Airways International has officially dissolved its wholly owned subsidiary, Thai Smile Airways Co., Ltd., after more than a decade of continuous financial losses. The announcement was made to the Stock Exchange of Thailand on June 5, 2025, following the approval of the Executive Plan Administrator Meeting held in May. The dissolution process was legally completed through the Department of Business Development under Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce.

Launched in 2013 with a registered capital of 1.8 billion baht, Thai Smile Airways was introduced as a regional full-service carrier under Thai Airways’ strategic leadership. It commenced operations on April 10, 2014, and operated its final commercial flight on December 31, 2023. Despite its initial promise, the airline struggled financially throughout its existence, accumulating more than 20.9 billion baht in losses over 12 years.

Thai Airways clarified that the dissolution of Thai Smile will not impact its core operations. The legal liquidation process is currently underway and will be conducted in full compliance with regulatory guidelines. The move represents a significant step in Thai Airways’ ongoing financial restructuring efforts, aimed at stabilizing its long-term operations and improving overall profitability following years of economic challenges and setbacks.

The closure of Thai Smile marks a strategic decision by Thai Airways to streamline its business model and focus on sustainable growth, as the national carrier continues to navigate its recovery path in a competitive global aviation market.
