Thailand Enacts Temporary Border Closures Along Select Thai–Cambodian Areas, Popular Tourist Sites in Most of Country Unaffected

The Royal Thai Government has announced temporary closures of certain border checkpoints and attractions along specific sections of the Thai–Cambodian frontier, covering limited zones within Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, and Buriram provinces. This decision comes in response to localised security concerns arising from a border dispute and recent incidents of unauthorised cross-border activity.

Acting under Special Order No. 613/2568, issued by the 2nd Army Region on July 23, 2025, authorities have suspended cross-border travel at affected checkpoints—including Chong Bok and Chong Ta Muen Thom—and restricted access to specific border-area tourist attractions falling within army-controlled security zones. The order temporarily halts both trade and civilian crossings in these remote areas to protect residents and travellers, following isolated clashes and reports of landmine risks near military patrol routes.

For public safety, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries such as Phu Chong-Na Yoi and Khao Phra Wihan in Ubon Ratchathani and Si Sa Ket provinces, as well as several sites in Surin, have been closed. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has identified additional locations—spanning seven provinces from Ubon Ratchathani to Trat—where travel is not currently recommended due to ongoing security precautions.

Travelers are reassured that these events are strictly contained to the far eastern border region and do not impact the vast majority of the country—including all major tourist destinations and transportation routes. The Royal Thai Government affirms that travel throughout Thailand remains safe, stable, and welcoming, with no disruptions to regular tourism, public services, or business in the rest of the nation.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates through official channels. Visitors are encouraged to check travel advisories and avoid border areas currently under restriction.
