The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) celebrated a significant milestone on December 16, welcoming the 2,000,000th Indian tourist of the year at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. This achievement underscores India’s crucial role in Thailand’s thriving tourism sector.
A grand ceremony attended by Sorawong Thienthong, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports; Nagesh Singh, Indian Ambassador to Thailand; TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool; and other dignitaries, marked the occasion. Passengers arriving on Thai Airways flight TG324 from Delhi were greeted with traditional Thai garlands, symbolizing the country’s renowned hospitality. Among them, the milestone visitor, Chetan Gupta, expressed his delight at the warm recognition.
Significance of the Milestone
Minister Sorawong Thienthong highlighted the growing popularity of Thailand among Indian travellers, saying, “This milestone reflects the enduring cultural and economic ties between our nations. We eagerly anticipate welcoming more visitors to explore Thailand’s unique attractions.”
TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool emphasized the impact of targeted marketing campaigns and improved connectivity, stating, “India remains a key market, and we are committed to providing exceptional experiences that cater to the varied interests of Indian travellers.”
India’s Growing Contribution to Thai Tourism
- Record Numbers: In 2023, Thailand welcomed 1.6 million Indian visitors, generating 61.9 billion Baht. This year, arrivals have surpassed 2 million, reflecting strong recovery post-pandemic.
- Popular Destinations: Indian tourists frequently visit Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, and emerging destinations like Surat Thani and Kanchanaburi. Activities include enjoying Thai cuisine, nightlife, beaches, spas, and historical landmarks.
Enhanced Accessibility
Thailand’s robust air connectivity with India has played a pivotal role, with 342 weekly flights offering 2.9 million seats annually—a 92.2% rebound from pre-pandemic levels. New routes, including Indigo’s Hyderabad-Bangkok and THAI’s Kochi-Bangkok flights, have further boosted accessibility.
Visa Exemption Policy
Thailand’s visa exemption policy for Indian tourists, allowing stays of up to 60 days, combined with TAT’s targeted campaigns, has enhanced travel convenience and solidified the country’s position as a premier destination for Indian travellers.
This milestone reflects Thailand’s dedication to fostering strong tourism ties with India, setting the stage for continued growth and collaboration.
