The United Kingdom has completed the rollout of its fully digital eVisa system, replacing traditional visa vignette stickers placed inside passports and eliminating the need for applicants to surrender their passports during visa processing.
According to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), more than 10 million individuals are already using secure eVisas, with the system now entering its final implementation phase. The digital format will become the default proof of immigration status across most UK visa categories, gradually replacing biometric residence permits (BRPs) and physical passport endorsements.
Under the new framework, applicants complete the visa application online, attend biometric enrolment at VFS Global-operated Visa Application Centres, and retain their passports while awaiting a decision via email. Approved travellers must create a UKVI account to access and manage their digital visa status.
The shift is expected to significantly enhance flexibility for international travellers, allowing them to apply for visas to other countries simultaneously without being restricted by passport submission timelines.
As the global visa service partner to UKVI, VFS Global will continue to manage appointment scheduling and biometric enrolment worldwide.
The move positions the UK among leading destinations accelerating digital border and immigration transformation.
