In a major step toward promoting sustainable tourism and wildlife conservation, the Forest and Wildlife Department of Uttar Pradesh has launched the ‘Buffer Mein Safar Yojana’, an eco-tourism initiative aimed at enhancing safari experiences in the buffer zones of key tiger reserves. This initiative not only focuses on preserving biodiversity but also empowers local communities through direct involvement in tourism-related activities.
The scheme is being rolled out in prominent reserves such as Dudhwa, Pilibhit, and Lakhimpur Kheri, with special emphasis on developing new safari routes in ecotourism-rich areas like Bhira and Mohammadi. One of the standout features of this plan is its ability to offer year-round jungle experiences, including during the monsoon season — traditionally a period when wildlife tourism halts. Additionally, the government is exploring ways to extend the operational days of tiger reserves to accommodate a growing number of eco-conscious tourists.
A core component of the ‘Buffer Mein Safar Yojana’ is community participation. Local residents are being trained and employed as nature guides, canteen staff, and chefs, turning them into stakeholders in the region’s tourism economy. This inclusive model not only enhances the authenticity of the visitor experience but also ensures that tourism revenue supports the livelihoods of local families.
The eco-tourism circuit is expanding to include biodiversity hotspots such as Semrai Lake a haven for migratory birds and the Kartaniya Ghat buffer zone near the Nepal border. These destinations are being positioned as key attractions to highlight the rich natural heritage of Uttar Pradesh.
To further enrich the tourist experience, a state-of-the-art information center has been established at Dudhwa. This center offers educational resources on wildlife, conservation efforts, and the unique cultural fabric of the region, transforming safaris into meaningful learning journeys for visitors of all ages.
With the launch of ‘Buffer Mein Safar Yojana’, Uttar Pradesh is emerging as a promising eco-tourism destination in India. By combining environmental protection with rural empowerment, the state sets a new benchmark for sustainable travel and community-driven conservation.
