Uttarakhand to Build Tapovan–Kunjapuri Ropeway with Swiss Firm Bartholet to Boost Spiritual Tourism

In a significant development for spiritual tourism and infrastructure growth, the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Swiss ropeway manufacturer Bartholet Maschinenbau AG to develop a ropeway connecting Tapovan in Rishikesh to the revered Kunjapuri Temple in Narendranagar. This landmark initiative, led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj, is expected to provide safer, faster, and eco-friendly access to the hilltop shrine, which draws thousands of pilgrims and tourists every year.

Bartholet, a globally recognized Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and part of the HTI Group, will prepare a comprehensive Detailed Project Report (DPR) at its own cost. The DPR will include an in-depth techno-economic feasibility study, ensuring the project adheres to top international standards. What makes this project unique is Bartholet’s end-to-end involvement—from concept planning and design to commissioning and operation—making it the first of its kind in India to follow such an integrated model. This approach is expected to eliminate design flaws, minimize technical delays, and streamline project execution.

Once operational, the Tapovan–Kunjapuri ropeway will significantly reduce travel time to the temple, enhance the spiritual tourism experience, and contribute to sustainable regional development. The project marks a major milestone in India’s ropeway infrastructure evolution, reinforcing Uttarakhand’s vision to become a leading destination for pilgrimage and eco-tourism.
