Voice of Influence | Mukesh Kumar Meshram: Reimagining Uttar Pradesh as a Global Cultural Powerhouse

In an era where tourism is as much about meaningful experiences as it is about destinations, Mukesh Kumar Meshram, Principal Secretary of Tourism and Culture, Government of Uttar Pradesh, stands at the helm of a quiet transformation. Under his stewardship, Uttar Pradesh is not just preserving its rich legacy—it is preparing to showcase it to the world with a renewed sense of purpose and precision.

Uttar Pradesh holds a unique identity in every sector,” Meshram said in a recent interaction, highlighting the state’s remarkable dominance in domestic tourism. “Due to its rich religious, spiritual, natural, and cultural heritage, the state ranks first in domestic tourism. Efforts are being made to achieve similar success in attracting international tourists, where the role of researchers will be significant.

This vision isn’t merely aspirational—it’s backed by policy, partnerships, and people-centric planning. Meshram has been instrumental in laying a strategic roadmap that blends infrastructure with heritage conservation, while also pushing boundaries in areas like rural and sustainable tourism.

“The government is committed to preserving and promoting its rich cultural, historical, and architectural heritage, emphasising its importance in tourism development,” he said. The recently held heritage conclaves and stakeholder engagements across the state echo this intent. “This is why a platform was created to facilitate discussions among stakeholders on enhancing the potential of heritage tourism.

What sets Uttar Pradesh’s tourism strategy apart is its simultaneous focus on grassroots empowerment. The department’s collaboration with UPSRLM (Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihoods Mission) and the Manyawar Kanshiram Institute has opened new avenues in rural tourism.

This initiative will enhance facilities and infrastructure, offering tourists an authentic experience of rustic village life,” Meshram said. “Our collaboration is a significant stride towards sustainable tourism and community empowerment.

As the global tourism industry shifts towards authenticity, local integration, and sustainable development, Uttar Pradesh appears to be aligning itself seamlessly with these global trends. With Meshram at the helm, the state is not merely leveraging its history—it is crafting a new narrative where tourism becomes a channel for cultural diplomacy, rural revitalization, and economic inclusion.

From the ghats of Varanasi to the forts of Bundelkhand and the serene hamlets of Terai, the vision is clear: Tourism that celebrates heritage, empowers communities, and invites the world to explore Uttar Pradesh beyond the expected.

In the voice of Mukesh Kumar Meshram, we hear not just policy—but passion, backed by purpose.
