Voice of Influence: “Tourism Will Drive AP’s Economic Engine”: Kandula Durgesh – Min. Tourism

Andhra Pradesh is on a mission to reclaim its place on India’s tourism map—and leading that charge is Kandula Durgesh, the state’s dynamic Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Cinematography. With a clear roadmap and an ambitious target of 20% growth in the tourism sector, Minister Durgesh is fast becoming one of the most influential voices shaping the future of domestic tourism in South India.

“We will submit monthly progress reports to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and implement projects based on regional strengths,” said the minister.

From scenic coastal getaways to spiritual circuits, the state is looking to leverage its diverse offerings. Major initiatives include the development of Bhavani and Hope Islands, launch of houseboats in Vijayawada and Rajahmundry, and setting up 180 luxury tents across six ecotourism sites.

While talking to media she gave glimps of her bold vision:

“Andhra Pradesh is committed to sustainable and inclusive tourism development. Our target is to attract ₹25,000 crore in tourism investments over the next five years.”

The government’s new Tourism Policy 2024–29 grants “industry status” to the sector, promotes Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), and identifies key circuits for development—including temple, eco, adventure, and agri-tourism. Seven destinations—Visakhapatnam, Araku Valley, Rajahmundry, Amaravati, Srisailam, Gandikota, and Tirupati—have been designated as “anchor hubs” for focused growth.

In a strategic move earlier this year, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) signed 8 MoUs worth ₹1,217 crore during the Visakhapatnam Tourism Investors Summit. These are expected to generate over 2,600 jobs and bring 825 new hotel rooms into operation.

“We are not just promoting destinations; we’re building livelihoods, infrastructure, and a future for Andhra Pradesh’s youth through tourism,” Durgesh added.

His vision is clear: transform Andhra Pradesh into a sustainable tourism powerhouse while preserving its heritage and generating inclusive economic growth.
