
The historic town of Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, is on track to becoming a major international tourism destination with a fresh allocation of INR 25 crore under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. This follows an earlier grant of INR 99.92 crore sanctioned in December 2024 for heritage conservation and museum development. Orchha is also in the running for UNESCO World Heritage recognition (2027–28 cycle) and has been selected under UNESCO’s Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) initiative, strengthening its global cultural status.
Major Tourism Development Initiatives in Orchha
The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, under Principal Secretary Shri Sheo Shekhar Shukla, is leading the transformation of Orchha into a world-class spiritual and cultural hub. Key projects under this initiative include:
Tourism Interpretation Centre – A high-tech Experience Centre near Topchi ki Haveli featuring a 3D model of Orchha, interactive exhibits, a café, and a children’s play area.
Hunarshala (Skill Pavilion) – A training and exhibition space for local artisans, offering live craftsmanship, workshops, and an open-air amphitheatre. The site will also have modern parking, e-charging stations, and QR-based ticketing systems.
Tourism Pathways & Beautification – Restoration and enhancement of tourism routes with ornamental balconies, street furniture, dedicated performance spaces, and improved signage & lighting.
Smart Tourism & Mobility Solutions – Launch of a hop-on-hop-off bus service, an interactive website, audio guides for monuments, and a visitor feedback system for continuous improvement.
Additionally, the INR 99.92 crore grant will support:
- Heritage restoration of gateways, bridges, and temples
- Urban infrastructure upgrades and road development
- Projection mapping & live performances
- QR-based guided walk apps & e-cart services
- Modern restrooms, fairground development, and shopping zones
