In a landmark move to redefine Goa’s tourism landscape, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism Shri Rohan A. Khaunte announced the launch of the INR 120.97 crore Town Square project in Porvorim, aimed at creating a vibrant, heritage-linked public space to promote cultural engagement and local economic development. Approved by the Cabinet, the project is spread across 11,000 sq. m and will feature unique amenities like Market Court, Welcome Court, Fountain Court, Movie Court, Heritage Court, an Ashoka Stambh, and a Clock Tower. The Central Government will fund INR 90.74 crore, with INR 35.32 crore contributed by the State Government. Completion is targeted for March 2026.

At a press conference attended by key officials including Shri Kedar Naik, Director of Tourism; Shri Kuldeep Arolkar, MD of GTDC; and Shri Gavin Dias, GM of GTDC, Shri Khaunte emphasized that the Town Square will be a hub for year-round community activities, artisans, and cultural entrepreneurs, offering new avenues for employment and creative expression.

Further strengthening Goa’s cultural tourism, Shri Khaunte announced beautification plans for the Porvorim Creek and the development of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum at Farmagudi. These projects fall under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, including the Rural Circuit from Porvorim to Harvalem, covering Torda Creek, Malim Jetty, Virlosa, and Pomburpa Spring. Spiritual tourism will also see growth through the Gomant Sarita Poojan at Narve, part of the Ekadasha Teertha initiative.

Colva’s redevelopment under the scheme’s coastal component will enhance visitor experience with upgraded facilities and public spaces. Shri Khaunte clarified that there is no ban on visiting waterfalls or monsoon-originated tourist spots, with safety measures in place through coordination with the Forest Department and Goa Forest Development Corporation.

Urging responsible communication, he highlighted efforts to promote “Monsoon Tourism” and a year-round travel narrative for Goa. The state is moving beyond its beach identity with investments in eco-tourism, MICE, wellness, and adventure tourism infrastructure. With nearly INR 400 crore worth of tourism projects sanctioned by the Centre, Goa aims to attract quality tourists and offer a holistic travel experience.
