Taiwan Lantern Festival 2026 Opens in Chiayi

The 2026 Taiwan Lantern Festival has officially opened in Chiayi County, bringing together culture, technology and sustainability in one of Taiwan’s most iconic annual celebrations.
The grand lighting ceremony was attended by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, who illuminated the festival’s main lantern titled “Alishan, Veiled in Luminous Mist.”
Held under the theme “Illuminating Taiwan, Lighting Up Chiayi,” the festival features over 600 lantern installations across two exhibition zones, including themed displays celebrating indigenous heritage, forestry, agriculture and future technology.
At the centre of the festival is the main lantern inspired by the forests of Alishan National Scenic Area, designed using recycled wood to reflect Taiwan’s commitment to sustainability.
Recognised as one of Asia’s most visually striking cultural events, the festival draws international visitors each year and highlights Taiwan’s blend of traditional culture, artistic creativity and modern innovation
