IndiGo Raises Fuel Charges as ATF Prices Surge Over 130%

India’s largest airline IndiGo has revised its fuel charges across domestic and international routes, reflecting a sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, which have surged by over 130% month-on-month in the region.

The revised charges will be applicable on all bookings made from April 2, 2026, signalling increasing cost pressures on airlines amid global fuel volatility driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions.

For domestic travel, the airline has introduced a distance-based fuel surcharge, with charges ranging from ₹275 for short-haul routes (up to 500 km) to ₹950 for sectors above 2,000 km. The move follows a decision by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas and the Ministry of Civil Aviation to allow only a partial and staggered pass-through of 25% fuel cost increase to airlines for domestic operations.

However, the impact is significantly higher on international routes, where ATF prices have more than doubled in recent weeks. IndiGo has accordingly implemented steeper fuel surcharges, with long-haul sectors such as Europe attracting up to ₹10,000 per passenger per sector, while routes to the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Africa also see substantial increases.

Industry experts say the development underscores the growing pressure on airlines as fuel costs—already accounting for a major share of operating expenses—continue to rise amid global instability. The increase is expected to translate into higher airfares, particularly on long-haul routes, potentially impacting travel demand in the near term.

The move comes at a time when airlines are already dealing with longer flight durations due to airspace restrictions and rerouting, further increasing operational costs.

While the government’s decision to limit the domestic fuel cost pass-through offers some relief, the overall rise in aviation fuel prices is likely to remain a key concern for both airlines and travellers in the coming months.
