Imphal Airport Expansion to Boost Capacity, Enable 24-Hour Operations by 2027

N. Biren Singh on April 13 reviewed the ongoing expansion of Imphal International Airport, with a focus on the construction of a new integrated terminal building aimed at significantly enhancing the airport’s capacity and efficiency.

Officials from Airports Authority of India (AAI) briefed the Chief Minister on the project’s progress. The terminal, being developed by Yashnand Engineers and Contractors Pvt. Ltd., is scheduled for completion by 2027. Singh assured full support from the state government to ensure timely execution.

Once operational, the new terminal will enable round-the-clock operations at the airport—an upgrade from the current 12–14 hour operational window—while substantially increasing passenger handling capacity from 1.39 million passengers per annum to 5 million. The expansion is expected to position Imphal as a key aviation hub in Northeast India.

The project also includes a major upgrade in parking infrastructure, with capacity set to increase from around 100 vehicles to over 1,000, aimed at improving passenger convenience and overall accessibility.

During the visit, the Chief Minister also reviewed the functioning of the airport’s existing air cargo terminal, underlining the importance of strengthening logistics infrastructure to support regional connectivity and economic growth.

Earlier in the day, Singh inspected ongoing road development works in Paona Bazar and directed officials to expedite execution while maintaining quality standards, signalling a broader push towards infrastructure development in the state.
