Star Air Bets Big on Underserved India, Eyes 50-Aircraft Scale-Up

India’s regional aviation space is witnessing a strategic shift as Star Air accelerates expansion in underserved markets, positioning itself as a key player in the country’s next phase of aviation growth.

Backed by a 55% revenue surge in 2025 and a growing network of 32 destinations, the airline is scaling operations in tier II and III cities—segments long overlooked by mainstream carriers focused on metro routes.

The airline plans to induct at least six aircraft this year, with a longer-term roadmap targeting a fleet of around 50 aircraft over the next five to six years. It is also evaluating a transition to 100+ seater aircraft, signalling a potential shift from niche regional operations to scaled connectivity.

This expansion comes at a time when India’s trunk routes are nearing saturation, with rising competition and pricing pressure. In contrast, regional markets continue to offer significant untapped demand, creating space for focused players to build sustainable networks.

Unlike most regional carriers that rely on turboprop fleets, Star Air operates Embraer jets, enabling faster travel and improved passenger comfort—factors increasingly influencing repeat demand in emerging markets.

The airline’s recent network push includes the addition of Mundra as its 32nd destination, alongside 17 new weekly flights. The move reflects a broader strategy to connect industrial and economic hubs that remain largely unserved, strengthening regional business ecosystems.

Despite ongoing volatility in the aviation sector—driven by geopolitical disruptions and fluctuating demand—the airline claims to have outperformed the market, focusing on consistency, customer retention and network reliability rather than aggressive expansion.

For now, the airline is staying focused on domestic growth, deferring international expansion while doubling down on opportunities within India. It also sees continued potential under the UDAN scheme, which has played a critical role in enabling regional connectivity through policy support and viability funding.

With India’s vast population still underpenetrated in terms of air travel, regional aviation is increasingly emerging as a serious growth engine—and Star Air is positioning itself at the centre of that shift.
