In a significant move to enhance tourism and connectivity in the region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a bold 10-point plan during the 21st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and India Summit held in Vientiane, Laos. This initiative, announced on October 10, aligns with the celebration of a decade of India’s Act East Policy and aims to fortify the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and ASEAN amidst ongoing global conflicts.
At the summit, PM Modi emphasized the crucial role of dialogue and cooperation between India and ASEAN member states, stating, “The India-ASEAN Summit was a productive one. We discussed how to further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.” His vision encapsulates a future where cultural ties and tourism flourish, contributing to economic resilience in the region.
One of the standout initiatives includes dedicating USD 5 million to support joint tourism activities, with 2025 earmarked as the ASEAN-India Year of Tourism. This investment is expected to stimulate travel between member nations, fostering deeper cultural exchanges and boosting local economies reliant on tourism.
In addition to financial commitments, PM Modi’s plan includes various cultural engagements aimed at younger generations, such as a Youth Summit and a Start-up Festival. These events will not only encourage dialogue and collaboration among youth but also attract international participants, further enhancing the travel and tourism landscape in both India and ASEAN countries.
The Prime Minister’s commitment to advancing tourism is complemented by the proposal to double scholarships at Nalanda University for ASEAN students, further encouraging academic exchange and drawing students to the region. Such educational initiatives have the potential to position India as an attractive destination for international students and researchers, thereby strengthening tourism related to education.
Moreover, the plan highlights India’s commitment to improving travel connectivity, as PM Modi noted the expansion of direct flight routes to seven ASEAN nations. Enhanced air travel options will make it easier for tourists to explore the breathtaking cultural and natural landscapes of Southeast Asia and draw Indian tourists to vibrant destinations across ASEAN countries.
The summit also reflected on shared cultural heritage, underscoring India and ASEAN’s mutual goal of promoting tourism that honors traditions and historical ties. PM Modi shared insights on cultural restoration efforts, which aim to attract tourists interested in the rich histories of these interconnected nations.
As the ASEAN-India Year of Tourism approaches, stakeholders in the tourism sector are optimistic that India’s proactive strategy will lead to increased travel, strengthened partnerships, and a shared commitment to resilience in the face of external challenges.
