IndiGoReach and AAI Launch Zero Waste Airport Project at Indore Airport

IndiGoReach, the CSR initiative of IndiGo, has partnered with the Airports Authority of India and the AAS Foundation, Indore, to launch the Zero Waste Airport Project, aiming to minimize the environmental impact of airport operations and set a benchmark for sustainable waste management in aviation. Employing the 4R strategy (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover), the project emphasizes behavioral change, stakeholder engagement, and training to promote sustainable practices at Indore Airport.

The Material Recovery Facility (MRF), a key component of the initiative, was inaugurated by Shri Rammohan Naidu, Hon’ble Union Minister of Civil Aviation, alongside other dignitaries including Shri Shankar Lalwani, MP Indore, Shri Kailash Vijayvargiya, Minister MP Urban Development, Shri Pushyamitra Bhargav, Mayor IMC Indore, and Vipin Kumar, Chairman of the Airports Authority of India. Attendees participated in a guided tour of the facility and observed innovative waste segregation and recycling processes.

Transitioning from traditional waste disposal, Indore Airport now adopts ‘Zero Waste’ practices, processing its daily 750 kg waste on-site. The project features a Wet Waste Processing Unit that converts organic waste into compost for landscaping and a state-of-the-art MRF that categorizes dry waste into 10 types for recycling. Public awareness campaigns and robust waste segregation practices are integral to fostering a culture of sustainability among passengers and staff.

Designed as a self-sustaining model, the initiative ensures long-term viability by utilizing income from compost and recycled materials to fund the salaries of green workers from the third year onwards. This collaborative effort between InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. (IndiGo) and the Airports Authority of India exemplifies a public-private partnership delivering tangible, sustainable benefits to the community.
