Meghalaya Accelerates Tourism Push with Homestay Expansion, Infrastructure Funding and Connectivity Boost

Meghalaya has unveiled a major tourism expansion roadmap focused on community-led growth, homestay development and infrastructure enhancement, reinforcing tourism as a key economic driver for the state.
At a Tourism Champions event held at Orchid Lake Resort, the government announced fresh support under the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Homestay Mission, which aims to create 3,000 new homestays and generate over 15,000 jobs by 2028.
The state also expanded its Community-Led Tourism Infrastructure Scheme, sanctioning up to ₹3.40 crore for 58 new tourism projects, while the PMEGP Homestay Scheme has already sanctioned ₹115.68 crore benefiting more than 900 stakeholders.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said Meghalaya is now firmly positioned on India’s tourism map and highlighted upcoming projects including the Shillong Ropeway, the Rain Museum in Mawsynram and new tourism centres across Sohra and other destinations.
The government also confirmed that the runway expansion at Umroi Airport is expected to be completed within the next 15 months, significantly improving regional connectivity and supporting future tourism growth.
Officials noted that Meghalaya has already recorded tourist footfall of around 18 lakh visitors, with tourism increasingly emerging as a major source of employment, entrepreneurship and community-driven development in the region.
