South African Airways to Resume India Operations with Johannesburg–Mumbai Route; GSA and Country Manager Appointments in Progress

In a significant step toward re-establishing its footprint in the Indian aviation market, South African Airways (SAA) is preparing to launch a direct Johannesburg–Mumbai route, with the airline now targeting a 2025 start. According to multiple media reports, the service was initially expected to begin operations in October 2025 but has been delayed due to aircraft delivery setbacks and broader operational considerations.

As part of its renewed focus on India, the airline is currently in the process of appointing a General Sales Agent (GSA) and a Country Manager to lead local market operations. These appointments are anticipated to be announced by the end of June, aligning with the airline’s broader India activation strategy.

The Johannesburg–Mumbai service will mark SAA’s return to India after several years, and will serve as its sole Indian gateway initially. Media sources suggest that a strong performance on the Mumbai route could pave the way for future expansion, with Delhi being considered as a potential next step.

Despite the delay in launch, airline officials see the additional time as an opportunity to solidify key partnerships and build robust trade engagement. Reports indicate that the airline is planning an aggressive marketing and trade outreach campaign in India, buoyed by strong response during recent South African Tourism roadshows.

To enhance connectivity beyond Mumbai, SAA is also expected to enter interline agreements with Indian carriers, facilitating broader domestic access for its passengers. This approach aligns with the airline’s strategy of building seamless regional connectivity across key global markets.

In addition to its India plans, SAA is also exploring expansion opportunities in Asia-Pacific, including a possible Guangzhou route via Southeast Asia, and new entry points in Australia. The airline currently operates long-haul services to São Paulo from both Johannesburg and Cape Town, as well as a route to Perth.
