SpiceJet has sharpened its winter expansion drive by inducting five additional Boeing 737 aircraft, including a Boeing 737 MAX, taking its total additions to 15 aircraft in just over a month—one of the fastest fleet buildups by the airline in recent years. Fourteen of these aircraft have come through damp leases, while one previously grounded 737 MAX has been brought back to service, signalling the carrier’s renewed ambition to scale up capacity.
With the latest inductions, SpiceJet’s active fleet now stands at 35 aircraft, all of which are already operating commercial flights. The expanded fleet is being deployed on high-demand domestic and international routes to cater to the festival and holiday rush, easing seat availability and strengthening schedule reliability.
The impact of the expansion is already visible. SpiceJet’s daily operational flights have climbed from 100 to 176 per day, marking a 76% surge since the winter schedule rollout. The move underscores the airline’s push to reclaim market strength amid intensifying competition across India’s aviation sector.
Chief Business Officer Debojo Maharshi said the winter expansion reflects “strong market demand and our readiness to meet it,” adding that the growing fleet positions the airline to offer more reliable, affordable and wider connectivity options.
The increase in Boeing 737 and 737 MAX aircraft also supports the airline’s focus on fuel-efficient operations and flexible deployment across medium-haul routes as it eyes a stronger international footprint.
SpiceJet’s stock responded positively, rising 3% on Thursday, with investors welcoming the airline’s expanded capacity and improving operational outlook.
With its winter fleet now significantly bolstered, SpiceJet is preparing to play a more assertive role in India’s rapidly growing aviation market over the coming months.
