In a pioneering move towards sustainable infrastructure, Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies, has entered a strategic partnership with Noida International Airport (NIA) to integrate renewable energy solutions. The collaboration includes two Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) signed in New Delhi, witnessed by top executives from both organizations, including Tata Power’s Sanjay Banga and Deepesh Nanda, and NIA’s CEO Christoph Schnellmann.
Tata Power Trading Company Ltd. (TPTCL) will manage the complete renewable energy portfolio, ensuring NIA’s clean energy needs are met through a Power Purchase Agreement. This plan includes supplying 10.8 MW of wind power sourced from Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL). Additionally, TPREL will establish a 13 MW on-site solar power capacity to further meet NIA’s energy needs.
Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, said, “Tata Power is proud to partner with Noida International Airport to pioneer renewable energy integration. As the nation enhances its aviation infrastructure, we are leading the charge by providing innovative clean energy solutions. This collaboration will support the development of Net Zero Airports, catering to millions of Indians and accelerating the country’s path towards a greener future.”
This partnership involves Tata Power’s ₹550 crore (~$66 million) investment, which will support both the wind and solar power supply and the development of critical dry utilities, including essential electrical infrastructure for the airport. Tata Power will also oversee the operation and maintenance of this infrastructure for 25 years to meet NIA’s smart energy requirements.
Christoph Schnellmann, CEO of Noida International Airport, commented, “Partnering with Tata Power represents a major step forward in our sustainability journey. By sourcing more than half of our energy needs from renewable sources, we are taking decisive action towards a more sustainable future. This agreement reflects our long-term vision for Noida International Airport to become a leader in environmentally conscious airport operations.”
Noida International Airport is projected to serve 12 million passengers annually upon the completion of its first development phase, featuring one runway and one terminal. With all four phases completed, it will have the capacity to handle 70 million passengers each year, making it one of India’s largest and most sustainable airports.
The agreement underscores Tata Power’s commitment to large-scale renewable energy solutions and signals the potential for replicating such models across India’s growing airport infrastructure. With over 200 new airports anticipated in the coming decades, Tata Power’s approach – from investment to project execution, trading facilitation, and long-term O&M services – aims to set new standards in reliability and sustainability for India’s aviation sector.
