In a major boost to India’s aviation sector, IndiGo and Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. (AAHL) have announced the commencement of commercial operations from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), with IndiGo becoming the first airline to commit to operating from the new airport. This strategic partnership marks a significant milestone for the aviation industry and aligns with India’s vision of becoming the third-largest aviation market by 2030.
IndiGo will begin operations with 18 daily departures (36 Air Traffic Movements) to over 15 cities from NMIA, scaling up to 79 daily departures—including 14 international flights—by November 2025. By March 2026, this will rise to over 100 daily departures, and by November 2026, IndiGo plans to operate 140 daily departures, including 30 international services.
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, stated that the launch from NMIA underscores the airline’s commitment to supporting India’s aviation expansion and enhancing travel experiences with affordable and efficient services. Arun Bansal, CEO of AAHL, highlighted that NMIA, developed as a state-of-the-art aviation hub, will serve as a key domestic and international transfer point, boosting connectivity and passenger convenience.
Set to handle 20 million passengers and 0.5 million metric tons of cargo annually in its initial phase, NMIA has a full capacity target of 90 million passengers and 3.2 MMT of cargo per year. The airport’s advanced infrastructure and strategic location position it as a critical player in strengthening India’s global air travel network.
The launch of NMIA also introduces a dual-airport system for Mumbai, easing congestion at the current airport and unlocking significant economic growth opportunities for the region and Maharashtra. IndiGo’s operations from NMIA will enhance accessibility across India and internationally, supporting its mission to offer seamless, convenient, and widespread air travel options.
