VietJet becomes first Vietnamese airline to operate flights using sustainable aviation fuel

VietJet has achieved a major milestone by becoming the first Vietnamese airline to operate flights using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). In partnership with Petrolimex Aviation, the airline successfully operated two SAF-powered flights—one to Melbourne, Australia, and the other to Seoul, South Korea.

The SAF used in these flights was derived from a variety of renewable sources, including used cooking oil, agricultural byproducts, wood biomass, and municipal waste. This innovative fuel can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fossil fuels, offering a significant breakthrough in the global push for greener air travel. Meeting stringent international aviation standards, SAF is safely integrated into commercial flight operations, and these inaugural flights are being hailed as a groundbreaking moment for both VietJet and the broader Vietnamese aviation industry.

“Today’s VietJet flights using SAF are particularly meaningful, symbolizing green flights and eco-friendly air travel,” said Dinh Viet Phuong, CEO of VietJet. “We’re offering passengers a wonderful, environmentally conscious flying experience, especially on international routes. As a pioneering airline in the research, development, and usage of SAF, VietJet remains committed to further reducing carbon emissions in aviation and fostering sustainable growth.”

This achievement aligns with Vietnam’s commitment at the COP26 summit to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. VietJet has partnered with global organizations to research, develop, supply, and expand the use of SAF, demonstrating its leadership in the industry’s environmental transformation.

VietJet’s adoption of SAF builds on more than a decade of sustainability efforts. From starting with just three aircraft, the airline has been at the forefront of eco-friendly initiatives such as transitioning to electronic tickets, encouraging online check-ins, using recyclable materials onboard, and implementing fuel-saving programs to reduce CO2 emissions. The airline is also involved in community-driven environmental programs, such as tree planting and ocean clean-up activities.
