Kerala to Launch Low-Interest Loan Scheme for Women in Tourism: Tourism Minister Riyas

In a significant step towards promoting women-friendly tourism, the Kerala government is set to roll out a low-interest loan scheme for women-led enterprises in the tourism sector, announced Shri P A Mohamed Riyas, Minister for Public Works and Tourism, in the State Assembly today.

The initiative, being developed in collaboration with the Women’s Development Corporation, aims to attract more women entrepreneurs and service providers to Kerala’s tourism landscape. Discussions on the scheme have already been held in the presence of the Minister for Women and Child Development, Shri Riyas informed.

“The scheme is expected to be finalized within this month and will serve as a major incentive for women to take up roles across the tourism ecosystem,” the Minister said.

The move comes under the umbrella of the women-friendly tourism initiative, which envisions building a robust network of women professionals across tourism-related services—ranging from tour operators, homestay owners, to taxi drivers. This network will not only enhance Kerala’s reputation as a safe and inclusive destination for women but also create sustainable employment opportunities for women across the state.

Training, Culture & Inclusivity at the Core

A key component of the initiative is training and skill development for women entrepreneurs and service providers. “Kerala, already renowned for its hospitality, has made remarkable progress in both entrepreneurship and human resource development in the tourism sector,” Shri Riyas noted.

Highlighting the role of art and culture, the Minister emphasized that women artists and cultural practitioners will have an integral role in tourism initiatives going forward. Projects will be designed to incorporate their talents into the broader tourism experience.

Kerala has been widely recognized for its inclusive tourism model, which ensures accessibility to all sections of society, including the elderly and differently abled. Shri Riyas reaffirmed the government’s commitment to carrying this inclusive vision into the development of new tourism destinations as well.
