The Louisiana Office of Tourism Organizes its first Sales Mission in India

The Louisiana Office of Tourism, the state’s official tourism promotion agency, organized its inaugural mission to India from September 23 to 27, 2024, with stops in Mumbai and New Delhi. The mission aimed to raise awareness among Indian travel professionals and media about the diverse tourism experiences Louisiana has to offer. Led by Louisiana Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and Doug Bourgeois, Assistant Secretary of Tourism, the delegation included representatives from Visit Lake Charles, New Orleans & Company, and Mississippi River Country.

India has become one of the fastest-growing overseas markets for the USA, with visitor numbers soaring 35% between January and July 2024, following a strong post-pandemic recovery in 2023. Louisiana’s cultural attractions, renowned cuisine, vibrant music scene, outdoor activities, and lively festivals make it an appealing destination for Indian travelers planning a U.S. holiday.

Supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Market Development Cooperator Program, the expansion into the Indian market involved partnerships with U.S. Commercial Services and the U.S. Embassy, as part of a broader effort to promote international travel. Louisiana’s convenient location in the Southeastern U.S., with easy access from major U.S. cities such as New York, Chicago, Houston, and Atlanta, further enhances its appeal. The primary gateway to the state is New Orleans via the newly renovated Louis Armstrong International Airport, which is well-connected to key Indian cities including Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai.

As part of its “Year of Music” celebration in 2024, Louisiana is highlighting its rich musical heritage, including jazz, Cajun, and Zydeco music. This campaign aims to draw visitors from around the world by showcasing the state’s unique musical traditions.

“We’re thrilled to continue our engagement with India,” said Doug Bourgeois, Assistant Secretary of Tourism. “Indian travelers seek the kind of authentic experiences that Louisiana offers, from incredible music to world-class food. We look forward to welcoming even more visitors from India to our great state.”
