China Establishes International Mangrove Center in Shenzhen to Boost Global Conservation Efforts

China has officially launched the International Mangrove Center in Shenzhen, marking a significant step forward in global mangrove conservation efforts. The inauguration event featured the signing of agreements and the unveiling of the new facility, which is set to become a key hub for international cooperation and communication on mangrove protection.

With this initiative, China aims to enhance collaborative actions for safeguarding mangrove ecosystems worldwide. The country, which has seen its mangrove areas expand to 74,873 acres—a net increase of approximately 20,510 acres since the early 21st century—remains among the few nations globally to achieve growth in mangrove coverage. These efforts underline China’s commitment to ecological restoration and biodiversity preservation.

The International Mangrove Center will play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable use, fostering international exchanges, and advancing cooperative frameworks for the conservation of mangrove and coastal blue carbon ecosystems. By embracing an inclusive, co-built, and shared approach, the Center seeks to elevate global mangrove protection initiatives to unprecedented levels.

This initiative aligns with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, aiming to strengthen the ecological foundation for a harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. Through this platform, China hopes to inspire greater international action toward achieving sustainable environmental outcomes.
