India is set to witness a major shift in regional connectivity with the introduction of its first dedicated commercial seaplane services, marking a significant expansion beyond traditional aviation infrastructure.
SkyHop Aviation has secured its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, clearing the way for commercial operations. The airline has already demonstrated operational readiness with successful water take-offs and landings in Rishikesh.
In the initial phase, operations will focus on Lakshadweep, connecting five islands internally and linking them to the mainland using 19-seater aircraft. The move addresses long-standing connectivity challenges in regions where building airports is difficult.
The introduction of seaplanes is expected to drastically cut travel time, replacing hours-long boat journeys with quick aerial transfers, especially critical for island territories.
Beyond connectivity, the development is poised to boost tourism by unlocking access to remote islands, lakes, and coastal destinations, while supporting local economic growth. The initiative signals India’s push towards innovative, multi-modal transport solutions and could redefine regional travel in underserved areas.
