Malaysia Airlines Strengthens Global Tourism Partnerships at International Trade Summit in Sabah

Malaysia Airlines brought together tourism boards, travel trade partners, aviation leaders and global industry stakeholders at a major international tourism summit in Sabah, reinforcing its long-term strategy to boost tourism growth, connectivity and destination promotion through strategic collaborations.

The multi-day event served as an important networking and business platform for tourism decision-makers from across international markets, focusing on partnership building, future tourism opportunities and strengthening Sabah’s positioning within the global travel landscape.

Designed as an immersive destination showcase, the summit highlighted Sabah’s natural beauty, adventure offerings and cultural richness through a series of curated experiences for delegates. Participants explored island experiences around Manukan Island, sunset cruises, water sports activities, golf tournaments, sunrise hiking sessions and local culinary showcases aimed at promoting the region’s hospitality and experiential tourism potential.

The four-day event concluded with a gala evening attended by senior leadership from Malaysia Aviation Group, including President and Group CEO Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar, Airline Business CEO Bryan Foong and Chief Commercial Officer Dersenish Aresandiran, where the airline shared strategic growth updates and future expansion plans with global trade partners.

A key highlight of the evening was the presentation of the prestigious Golden Wau Awards, recognising exceptional contributions and support from travel trade partners across various international markets.

This year also marked the introduction of a special recognition category focused on excellence in social engagement initiatives, reflecting the airline’s increasing emphasis on digital outreach, online engagement and evolving tourism marketing strategies.

Malaysia Airlines stated that the summit underlines its continued commitment to promoting Malaysia globally through stronger tourism partnerships, enhanced connectivity and destination-driven travel experiences.

The airline currently operates extensive connectivity into Sabah via Kuala Lumpur and has additionally announced extra festive-season flights and subsidised fares across East Malaysia routes ahead of the Kaamatan and Gawai celebrations, further supporting regional tourism movement and domestic travel demand.

Industry observers believe such collaborative tourism summits are becoming increasingly important as airlines move beyond transportation and position themselves as active stakeholders in destination marketing, tourism development and experiential travel promotion.
