Thailand is planning to reduce the visa-free stay period for travellers from 93 countries, including India, from 60 days to 30 days amid growing concerns over misuse of extended stays and illegal activities linked to certain foreign visitors.
The proposed revision comes less than two years after Thailand expanded its visa-free entry policy in July 2024 to boost tourism and economic recovery. Thai authorities have now indicated that stricter scrutiny across multiple visa categories may also be introduced to ensure visitors comply with the intended purpose of their stay.
Thailand remains one of the most popular outbound destinations for Indian travellers, particularly for leisure holidays, weddings, luxury travel and short-haul international vacations. If implemented, the revised policy could impact long-stay travellers, digital nomads and visitors planning extended holidays in the country.
The move also comes at a time when Thailand’s tourism sector is witnessing a slight slowdown. Between January 1 and May 10, 2026, the country received approximately 12.4 million foreign visitors, marking a decline of 3.43 percent compared to the same period last year.
However, Thailand has not yet officially announced an implementation date for the revised visa-free duration, and the proposal is expected to go through further approvals before taking effect.
