Thailand Launches Five-Year Destination Thailand Visa for Digital Nomads and Long-Stay Travellers

In a major move aimed at attracting long-stay international travellers and remote professionals, Thailand has introduced the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), a new five-year multiple-entry visa programme designed for digital nomads, freelancers, remote workers, wellness travellers and cultural tourists, including visitors from India.

The newly launched visa category allows travellers to stay in Thailand for up to 180 days per entry, with the option to extend each stay up to 360 days. Visa holders will also be permitted unlimited re-entries during the five-year validity period, providing greater flexibility for travellers who frequently move between countries while maintaining Thailand as a long-term base.

The initiative reflects Thailand’s broader tourism and economic strategy to position itself as a leading hub for remote work, lifestyle tourism and long-duration travel in Asia amid rising global demand for flexible mobility and work-from-anywhere arrangements.

According to the guidelines, the visa specifically targets foreign professionals working remotely for overseas employers or clients, along with travellers participating in approved cultural and wellness activities such as Muay Thai training programmes, Thai cooking courses and wellness retreats.

However, the visa does not permit holders to work for Thailand-based companies unless they obtain a separate work permit under existing employment regulations.

To qualify for the DTV, applicants must be at least 20 years old and demonstrate financial stability by showing proof of 500,000 Thai Baht in liquid assets, equivalent to approximately Rs. 14–15 lakh. Applicants are also required to submit a valid passport, proof of accommodation, financial documentation and health insurance coverage.

For Indian applicants, the visa fee is estimated at approximately Rs. 25,000, and applications can be submitted online or through authorised visa centres.

Industry observers believe the introduction of the DTV could further strengthen tourism and economic ties between India and Thailand, particularly at a time when long-stay travel, remote working and wellness tourism continue to gain momentum globally.

With India remaining one of Thailand’s key source markets, the visa is expected to encourage longer stays, repeat visits and deeper cultural engagement among Indian travellers seeking flexible international lifestyle and work opportunities.

The development is also expected to benefit Thailand’s hospitality, co-working, wellness and tourism sectors by attracting higher-spending international visitors who contribute to the local economy over extended periods rather than short holiday cycles.
