Japan Airlines (JAL) and NEC Corporation have successfully conducted a joint trial of a new baggage counting solution using artificial intelligence (AI). The trial, held from April to September 2024 at Tokyo International Airport (Haneda), aimed to evaluate the system’s accuracy in detecting and classifying carry-on baggage at boarding gates.
This groundbreaking system automatically analyzes the quantity and types of carry-on baggage, helping to prevent congestion and delays caused by excess baggage in overhead bins. By alerting staff when limits are exceeded, the system aims to reduce boarding time and improve flight punctuality.
The trial’s results will guide JAL’s future implementation of the solution to enhance operational efficiency and the overall passenger experience. The airline plans to continue leveraging digital technology to streamline boarding processes and prevent delays.
