Air India Poised for Global Expansion and Modernization Post-Privatisation

Air India has achieved notable milestones since its privatisation by the Tata Group in January 2022 and is now set to further enhance its global reach. According to CEO Campbell Wilson, the airline has embarked on a five-year transformation plan that includes fleet modernisation, operational integration, and significant expansion efforts.

In 2024, Air India completed the mergers of Vistara and Air India Express with AIX Connect, increasing its fleet to 300 aircraft and enabling operations across more than 100 domestic and international destinations. A recent order for 100 new planes, in addition to a 2023 commitment for 470 aircraft, underscores its growth ambitions.

Infrastructure upgrades are also underway, with a 12-bay maintenance facility and training school in Bengaluru, a 34-aircraft flight school in Amravati, and a training academy in Gurugram. These developments support India’s goal of becoming a global aviation hub, with Indian carriers offering direct international connections.

The airline’s single-aisle fleet, serving domestic and short-haul international routes, is undergoing an interior refit, expected to conclude by mid-2025. Wilson praised the efforts of Air India’s 30,000 employees, emphasizing their commitment to elevating the airline’s service quality and transforming it into a world-class carrier.
