Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has announced the signing of a Taj-branded hotel in Guwahati, marking the entry of its flagship luxury brand into the capital city of Assam. The announcement was made in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, highlighting the growing importance of the Northeast in India’s hospitality and tourism landscape.
The upcoming 250-key Taj Guwahati will be developed through a comprehensive redevelopment and expansion of an existing property. The project will include the renovation and repositioning of 150 existing rooms, along with the addition of 100 new rooms, significantly expanding the hotel’s capacity.
IHCL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Puneet Chhatwal said the company sees strong long-term potential in Assam and the wider Northeast region.
“The development of a Taj hotel in Guwahati reflects our confidence in Assam’s economic momentum and Guwahati’s position as the commercial and cultural gateway to the Northeast. As demand in the region continues to evolve, the introduction of Taj will strengthen the city’s hospitality ecosystem while supporting its growth as a centre for business and tourism,” Chhatwal said.
The new Taj hotel will be spread across more than nine acres of land in central Guwahati and is expected to be positioned as an urban luxury retreat inspired by the culture and heritage of Assam.
According to IHCL, the property will feature multiple specialty restaurants, extensive banqueting and meeting spaces, and the group’s signature J Wellness Circle spa and wellness facilities, catering to both corporate and leisure travellers.
Guwahati has increasingly emerged as a key commercial hub for the Northeast, driven by infrastructure development, improved air connectivity and growing investment across sectors such as tourism, logistics and trade. The city also serves as the primary gateway for travellers heading to popular destinations in the region, including Kaziranga National Park, Shillong and Arunachal Pradesh.
Industry observers say the entry of a Taj property into the city reflects rising demand for premium hospitality infrastructure in the Northeast, particularly as government initiatives continue to promote tourism and regional connectivity.
With this signing, IHCL will have five hotels in Guwahati, including three currently under development, further strengthening the company’s footprint in the region.
The expansion also aligns with IHCL’s broader strategy of accelerating growth across emerging leisure and business destinations in India, as the group continues to expand its portfolio of luxury and upper upscale hotels across the country.
